Around 35% of vegetables, 59% of fresh fruit, 80% of seafood and coffee, and an incredible 97% of shoes and clothing bought by Americans are imported. Although Trump falsely claims that foreign countries will pay for his import tariffs, everyone from Wall Street to Main Street understands that tariffs jack up prices. That’s why consumer sentiment among independent voters has plummeted to its lowest level in history. Lower-income shoppers, who spend a greater share of their income on essentials, will be hardest hit.
To distract from the disaster he single-handedly created, Trump tried the same technique that got him elected. He lied. On April 22, Trump said gas prices “hit $1.98 yesterday in a couple of states.” That was a lie. No state had an average gas price below $2.70/gallon according to AAA, which reported a national average of $3.17/ gallon.
Trump also said grocery prices have “come down.” That’s another lie. Average grocery prices have spiked since Trump’s inauguration. In March, they were up 2.41% from March 2024, the largest year-over-year jump since inflation peaked three years ago.
The biggest lie of all was when Trump said, “as you know, the cost of eggs has come down like 93, 94% since we took office.” Any grocery shopper can tell you that’s an embarrassingly ridiculous lie. In March, the national average price hit a record high of $6.23/dozen. Do the math. A decline of 93% from the national average consumer cost for a dozen large Grade A eggs in January of $4.95 would mean that eggs should now cost 35 cents a dozen!
So, if you wonder how come you’re not paying 35 cents for a dozen eggs, look for your answer to the old nursery rhyme, updated in honor of Donald Trump:
Trumpty Dumpty said to us all,
“The price of eggs had a great fall,”
All Trumpty’s women and all Trumpty’s men
Couldn’t stop Trumpty from lying again.
