Trump, again, chickens out, Brunswick Beacon

Hell-bent on deporting undocumented immigrants, Trump gave ICE a quota of 3,000 arrests/day. To fill it, ICE arrested a popular high school volleyball player driving to practice in Massachusetts, where he’s lived since he was five; made courthouse arrests of asylum-seekers who entered the U.S. legally and were obeying the law; and deported three kids who are American citizens, including a four-year-old being treated for Stage 4 cancer. Those are just a few examples.

Americans are shocked to see armed troops patrolling the streets of an American city. Quinnipiac’s June 11 poll found 56% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of deportations. Newsweek’s June 12 headline read: “Donald Trump’s Approval Rating is Underwater on Every Issue.”

Trump instructed Republicans to kill Biden’s bi-partisan immigration reform bill because he wanted a campaign issue instead of a solution. Trump’s deportation debacle is cruel and self-destructive. Our economy depends on immigrants, documented or not, to function. 

Who do you think harvests the produce you buy? Who built the house you live in? Who mows your lawn? Who takes care of your parents or kids so you can earn a living? Immigrants, who pay social security taxes, income taxes, gas and meals taxes that benefit us all. Focus Broadband is installing fiber-optic internet to many homes in Brunswick County. That work is being done by immigrants. You’d better hope they finish your installation before ICE deports them.  

The businesses hurt by Trump’s short-sighted policy forced him to back down. On June 12, he wrote: "Our great Farmers and people in the Hotel and Leisure business have been stating that our very aggressive policy on immigration is taking very good, long-time workers away from them, with those jobs being almost impossible to replace. This is not good. Changes are coming!" Typical Trump: shoot first, ask questions later. 

Once told how damaging his deportations are, Trump did what he always does, because Trump Always Chickens Out.
