The removal of the IRA tax credits as part of the Federal budget reconciliation would have a major impact both on the country as a whole and the state of North Carolina. The tax incentives serve as a means to incentivize companies to produce products that are used in the production of clean energy, as well as serving to motivate individuals to convert from fossil fuels to electricity to power their homes. The combination of the two has an important effect on deterring climate change, which we are seeing the results of in wildfires, excessive heat, droughts, and hurricanes such as Helene.
The state’s economy would also suffer from the loss of the tax credits. Companies have invested heavily in producing clean energy due to the tax incentives they received. Almost 21 billion dollars has been invested since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, which has led to the creation of over 17,000 good-paying jobs.
Twenty-six Republican Congressional Representatives and four Senators, recognizing the impact it would have, signed letters that were forwarded to their respective leadership in an attempt to try to save the IRA tax credits. The legislators in North Carolina who signed the letters in support of the tax credits were Congressman Rouzer, Moore, Hudson, and Tillis. It is extremely important to continue to call and write our Congressmen to make sure that the tax incentives are retained and we do not lose them in budget reconciliation, which is progressing rapidly.
