Letter to the editor: Trump broke his most important promise, Brunswick Beacon

Greg Kent’s July 10 letter, “Promises made, promises kept” makes false claims and ignores the fact that Trump broke his promise to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution.”

Kent claims human trafficking is down. He cites no evidence, so I went to Trump’s Department of Homeland Security website. Under “Human Trafficking” it says: “there is no reliable estimate of human trafficking within the United States,” which means Kent’s claim is baseless. In fact, Trump cut $500 million from efforts to combat human trafficking. See The Guardian’s March 27 article, "Trump cuts 69 global programs tackling child labor and human trafficking."

Kent claims fentanyl deaths are down. Wrong again. According to the CDC, there were 22,923 deaths when Trump took office in 2017 and 31,589 when he left in 2021. Under Biden, deaths dropped to 16,690! The CDC reports that fentanyl deaths are now showing a significant increase from December 2024.

Kent says military enlistment is up, but Biden did that. Enlistments fell for 40 years, including during Trump’s first term, until Biden signed pay increases of 4.6% for 2023, 5.2% for 2024, and 4.5% for 2025. That’s why enlistments surged 14% from 2022 to 2024.

Kent repeats Trump’s bogus claim that he “orchestrated” peace between India and Pakistan. India’s Prime Minister Modi contradicted Trump, saying, “at no point was there any discussion, at any level, for mediation by the U.S. between India and Pakistan.” Trump was forced to back off his claim, and now acknowledges that India and Pakistan “decided that” themselves.

Trump, a convicted felon, pardoned everyone charged in the January 6 insurrection he incited, including those convicted of violently attacking law enforcement officers. Edward Kelley, who Trump pardoned, was convicted of plotting to murder the FBI agents who investigated him. With his blanket pardons of violent January 6 attackers, Trump violated his sacred duty under the Constitution to “take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed.”
