Letter to the editor: Tillis responsible for Hegseth disaster, Brunswick Beacon



Trump’s National Security Adviser Michael Waltz recklessly added reporter Jeffrey Goldberg to a group chat discussing plans to bomb Yemen. “A staffer wasn’t responsible,” said Waltz. “I take full responsibility. I built the group.”


The chat included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. All of them should have asked, “Who’s ‘JG,’ and why is he on this chat?” None of them did. 


Thirty-one minutes before the attack, Hegseth sent this text: 

 

  • “TIME NOW (1144ET): Weather is FAVORABLE. Just CONFIRMED w Centcom we are a GO for mission launch.”

  • “1215et: F-18s LAUNCH (1st strike package)”

  • “1345: ‘Trigger Based’ F-18 1st Strike Window Starts (Target Terrorist is @ his Known Location so SHOULD BE ON TIME – also, Strike Drones Launch (MQ-9s)”

  • “1410: More F-18s LAUNCH (2nd strike package)”

  • “1415: Strike Drones on Target (THIS IS WHEN THE FIRST BOMBS WILL DEFINITELY DROP, pending earlier ‘Trigger Based’ targets)”

  • “1536 F-18 2nd Strike Starts – also, first sea-based Tomahawks launched.”

  • “Godspeed to our warriors.”


Hegseth used the free commercial messenger app “Signal,” which anyone can download to their phone. A 2023 Department of Defense memo prohibited using Signal for communicating “non-public DoD information” (which that was) because it “may result in unauthorized disclosure,” which it did. Soon after Hegseth’s security breach, the Pentagon warned that, “A vulnerability has been identified in the Signal Messenger Application. Russian professional hacking groups are employing the ‘linked devices’ feature to spy on encrypted conversations.”


Hegseth’s mother called him “an abuser of women.” Hegseth’s ex-sister-in-law corroborated it. Tillis told her to put it in writing, promising, “It would carry weight.” She did as Tillis asked, and signed a sworn affidavit saying Hegseth abused his wife. Tillis voted to confirm Hegseth anyway. His was the deciding vote. No Tillis, no Hegseth.


Hegseth is a national security disaster. Tillis is to blame.
