“Whoever knowingly and willfully obstructs or retards the passage of the mail, or any carrier or conveyance carrying the mail, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.” Federal law is clear: steal the mail — go to jail. But what if the mail thief is Donald Trump?

On March 31, Trump issued an Executive Order restricting your ability to vote by mail. “Mail-in ballots are inherently corrupt,” Trump said on July 16. They aren’t. Studies show that mail-in voting fraud is vanishingly small — about four cases for every 10 million mail-in votes.

Not even Trump believes it. In 2024 he recorded a video for the Republican National Committee’s “Bank Your Vote” campaign, urging Republicans to vote early with mail-in ballots.

Trump himself voted by mail twice this year: in Florida’s March special election and August primary. Trump said, “I decided that I was going to vote by mail-in ballot because I couldn’t be there, because I had a lot of different things. I was away, mostly in Washington, D.C., so I used a mail-in ballot.”

Actually, Trump was in Florida, at his golf club, on March 14 and 15. He could have voted either day. Maybe Trump thinks mail-in voting is corrupt because he himself abuses the privilege, then lies about it.

The real reason Trump wants to restrict your ability to vote like he does is to make it harder for you to elect Democrats. He said so himself: “We got to stop mail-in voting, and the Republicans have to lead the charge. If you [don’t] have mail-in voting, you’re not gonna have many Democrats get elected.”

On Sept. 4, a federal judge called Trump’s order “unconstitutional” and enjoined the Postal Service from refusing to deliver your mail-in ballot. Trump appealed the ruling to the Supreme Court so he can break the law by stealing your mail and your vote.
