In “1984”, George Orwell describes how dictatorships rewrite history before your eyes. Inconvenient truths get flushed down the memory hole, replaced by “alternative facts.” Dissenters are not just wrong, says Big Brother. They’re also traitors.
We all saw the Jan. 6 Insurrection. Convicted felon Donald Trump assembled his mob and hurled it at the Capitol, saying, “If you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore." For three hours, they stormed the Capitol building to intimidate Congress into certifying Trump president instead of Biden. People died. The mob erected gallows and screamed, “hang Mike Pence.”
Republican Senators under attack denounced it in real-time. Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) said, “I condemn this violent assault on the democratic process & will not be intimidated by a mob.” Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) called it, “third-world style anti-American anarchy.” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said, “Violence and mob rule is wrong and un-American.”
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called it, “repugnant to democracy.” Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) called it “despicable and unacceptable.” Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) called it “disgraceful and un-American.”
Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE) said, “These rioters have no constitutional right to harm law enforcement and storm our Capitol. We are a nation of laws, not some banana republic.” Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) said, “Call it what it is: An attack on the Capitol is an attack on democracy.”
That didn’t keep Trump from rewriting history before our eyes, calling Jan. 6 “a day of love” and lying that “We didn’t have guns. The others had guns.” The “others” included 140 police officers injured defending democracy in what D.C.‘s U.S. Attorney called “the largest single-day mass assault of law enforcement" in American history.
Trump promised to pardon the Jan. 6 cop killers, who he called “political prisoners,” and prosecute the Jan. 6 Committee for “treason.” Orwell wrote, “Who controls the past, controls the future.” Trump is out to prove Orwell right.
