An inconvenient truth

First published in the Brunswick Beacon, 07.16.26

Hot enough for you? This summer may go down as the hottest on record. There have been at least 44 heat-related deaths in the USA this summer. And, considering global warming, this is just the beginning of what can be expected every year!

97% to 99.9% of scientists believe global warming is a fact. Yet Donald Trump calls global warming a “hoax” and a “scam.” His administration has caused a massive rollback of domestic environmental regulations and the complete withdrawal of the USA from international climate agreements.

He withdrew the USA from The Paris Agreement twice and the US no longer supports various global climate bodies financially. Trump has implemented aggressive deregulation, focusing on expanding fossil fuel production and removing climate-related restrictions. He has dismantled greenhouse gases emission rules and taken on a “drill, baby, drill” approach. He has sought to reduce the government’s climate research efforts.

What he has done regarding global warming threatens us all! He is denying a fact agreed upon by those who have actually studied the matter. If it has been way too hot for your comfort this summer, there still might be time to lessen the effects of global warming. Demand regulation of fossil fuels and the return of the USA to the fight against global warming. Many of the dire effects cannot be reversed, but perhaps they can be mitigated. Come November we must elect representatives who agree that global warming is a real threat.
