North Carolina's extreme abortion ban bill: White House statement

05.05.23 Statement from White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre

"Yesterday, North Carolina’s Republican supermajority-controlled legislature passed an extreme abortion ban [Sen. Bill 20] that would interfere with the doctor-patient relationship and make it even harder for women — especially those in the South — to access care. The details of this ban have been obscured to make it seem less dangerous, but this bill would make it harder for many women to get the care they need. Since the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade, women have been denied medical care they desperately need in order to preserve their health and even save their lives. They’ve been turned away from emergency rooms, made to travel hundreds of miles for care, and left with complications that threaten their ability to bear children in the future. These impacts are the direct result of extreme state-level abortion bans. President Biden and Vice President Harris will continue to fight to restore the protections of Roe under federal law."

Lest anyone be fooled by the ironically-named "Care for Women, Children, and Families Act" (SB 20), read NC Newsline's article outlining the details of the bill, which effectively make all abortions, even those sought before the general 12-week ban, extremely difficult to obtain. For example, the CDC reports that the majority of NC patients who seek an abortion use abortion pills. SB 20 mandates three in-person visits with a doctor to use the pills, which the FDA does not require.

Governor Cooper has vowed to veto the bill, but thanks to Tricia Cotham -- former Democrat and former supporter of Roe v. Wade -- who betrayed her constituents, MAGA-Republicans now have a veto-proof majority in the North Carolina General Assembly.
