In a win for North Carolina voters, the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this month denied an attempt by Republican legislators to impose their illegally gerrymandered congressional map on our state.
Last month, we won our case against gerrymandering as the North Carolina Supreme Court struck down unfair congressional districts crafted by Republican legislators. The state court then approved a new congressional map drawn by neutral experts.
But instead of respecting that historic ruling, stated GOP leaders tried to overturn the decision and foist their gerrymandered congressional districts upon the people of North Carolina by making a last-ditch plea to the U.S. Supreme Court.
However, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected that shameless attempt by Republican legislators. The court's decision leaves in place the congressional map drawn by neutral experts for the 2022 election.
This is a welcome victory for the people of our state and our Constitution. But more work is needed to stop racist and partisan gerrymandering for good in North Carolina. To achieve a lasting end to gerrymandering, we must enact lasting reform.
We should permanently take redistricting power out of the hands of politicians and entrust it with an impartial citizens’ commission for future map drawing. Brunswick County Democrats will continue to advocate for an inclusive democracy for all, and we will support efforts to ensure every North Carolina voter has an equal voice in choosing their representatives.
