2022 BCDW EDUCATION GRANT AWARD
The Brunswick County Democratic Women (BCDW) have awarded the 2022 Education Grant of $1000 to Ms. Presley Cerrillo. Ms. Cerrillo is a registered Democrat and lives in Calabash, NC, with her parents, younger brother and sister, and two precious dogs, Cookie and Luna.
She graduated in May 2022 from Brunswick Community College Early College with a High School Diploma and an Associate Degree in Science. She has been active with the Rotary Interact Club (President), the National Honor Society, St. Brendan’s Faith Formation, and Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary. Ms. Cerrillo graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade average.
Ms. Cerillo plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall and will focus on a BA in Business Administration. She has also been awarded a Carolina Covenant Scholarship and a scholarship from the Knights of Columbus. Her longer term plans include pursuing graduate degrees in Dentistry with the goal of opening a small dental clinic in Mexico or the US to help provide her community with more accessible and affordable dental care.
Ms. Cerrillo says, “This grant is important for me because I am a first-generation college student who seeks to pursue a career in dentistry to help my rural community.” And she is proud that her younger siblings are now interested in attending college also.
We Support Hope Harbor Home
The Brunswick County Democratic Women have supported Hope Harbor Home for several years. It is the only domestic violence shelter for women in our county. Its many programs promote nonviolence in our communities, provide legal advocacy, and involve local social services for clients. The BCD Women conduct two fundraisers a year for Hope Harbor Home, one coinciding with Independence Day, the other, Thanksgiving. Any and all can oppose domestic violence by donating, volunteering, and/or shopping at one of their three thrift stores (in Bolivia, Leland, and Oak Island). Visit their website at hopeharborhome.org. Office: 910-754-5726. Crisis Line: 910-754-5856
